Atlanta PlanIt and Atlanta InTown

Atlanta - Launching in the September issue of Atlanta InTown Magazine, fans of the “InTown Recommends” section will now find a monthly listing of arts and culture events provided by popular website, Atlanta PlanIt.com.

This arrangement is an expansion of an existing partnership between the organizations. For over a year, Atlanta InTown has utilized Atlanta Plant’s RSS feed, a tool that displays thirteen daily cultural events on InTown’s homepage – in exchange for in-kind advertising and promotion.

“We are thrilled to expand this partnership to print. Atlanta InTown is a great supporter of Atlanta’s cultural community,” says Nicole Jones, Atlanta PlanIt’s Editor in Chief.

Based on the success of its partnership with Atlanta InTown, Atlanta PlanIt, a project of the Metro Atlanta Arts & Culture Coalition, hopes to continue to cultivate content-based partnerships as a way to increase exposure to the arts and culture community. The site currently has a number of online and print channel-partner kits and has established website feeds for MARTA, WSB TV, Atlanta Jewish Times and is excited to see content go live on the ACVB’s site, Atlanta.net

Wikipedia

Anyone who has known me for any period of time knows that I have an intense love/hate relationship with Wikipedia. We all know that it is unreliable, yet it is used in our office a great number of times to end disputes, confirm assumptions and generally provide useless information. Greg further confirmed the site's inadequacy by making one posting a bit more interesting...

For those of you who click on this after the "wiki police" or whoever else monitors the listings removes the information, this is a line that can be found on the Wikipedia search "List of Breakdance Moves"

At that time Canadian Gregory Burbidge broke records for Air Flare, Headspins, and Elbow Airflares. American Lauren Jacob held the record for Chair Flares. American Laura Derrick held the record for Tappingmills. Nicole Jones (nationality unknown) held the record for Munch Airflares. In 2004 Guinness removed these titles from their records. At the time Gregory Burbidge was the only one who still held records from the original group.

For those of you who don' t know, these are the names of the folks that bring you Atlanta PlanIt, not the names of breakdance stars - although I am quite sure that Lauren dreams about it sometimes.

I look forward to tracking how long it takes before the information is taken down. Posting our names on Wikipedia will take the place of the staff's old favorite game, Photoshop Wars - pictured here for your enjoyment.

Flying piece of art causes museum chaos in Switzerland

Mon Aug 11, 3:26 PM ET
GENEVA (AFP) - A giant inflatable dog turd by American artist Paul McCarthy blew away from an exhibition in the garden of a Swiss museum, bringing down a power line and breaking a greenhouse window before it landed again, the museum said Monday.

The art work, titled "Complex S(expletive..)", is the size of a house. The wind carried it 200 metres (yards) from the Paul Klee Centre in Berne before it fell back to Earth in the grounds of a children's home, said museum director Juri Steiner.

The inflatable turd broke the window at the children's home when it blew away on the night of July 31, Steiner said. The art work has a safety system which normally makes it deflate when there is a storm, but this did not work when it blew away.

Steiner said McCarthy had not yet been contacted and the museum was not sure if the piece would be put back on display.

Great Meetings

I have been encouraged the past few days attending a number wonderful meetings where Atlanta's organizations are working collaboratively - so I thought I would share the wealth in case anybody else is interested in attending.

For those of you working in downtown Atlanta proper, Central Atlanta Progress (CAP) hosts a wonderful Marketing Roundtable the first Wednesday of each month- attendees include restaurateurs, hotel folks, arts folks, pr folks - you name it. Everybody shares what their respective organizations are doing and it is a great chance to network with the people who make downtown Atlanta a place to visit. Contact Lynn Williamson for more info if you are interested.

I also was exposed to the Metro Atlanta Cultural Group Sales Network today. This is a group of cultural institutions that collaborate to host an expo to highlight their group sales offerings to patrons looking for group discounts (teachers, tour group leaders, senior groups, alumni groups, etc) Looking for group ticket sales? Check out www.hot-ticket.blogspot.com.

For those of you working in membership at an arts organization, your colleagues want to hear from you! Email me for more information. PS the meeting was at Zoo Atlanta, the lion cubs are pretty incredible, you should check them out!

Finally, you can always attend a MAACC Arts Marketing Roundtable which provides arts organization representatives with a person-to-person forum to share best practices and discuss topics in arts marketing. We meet the second Monday of every month at 10 am. Email me if you would like to be added to our list.

Best,
N

My very first blog

I can't believe this day has come... for many years I was anti-Facebook, Myspace, AIM and any other platform where traditional human communication is eliminated and replaced with acronyms, clever writing and an expectation that people might be interested in what I have to say. Seeing that I edit a website and work in the world of technology I am begrudgingly writing this blog at the encouragement of our technology partners who assure me "that someone out there will want to know what you are doing."

So here it goes, the reluctant Atlanta PlanIt Editor's blog...
